Tipsters who report drunk drivers could get $100

Tipsters who report drunken drivers in Columbia can get a $100 reward under a new initiative.

The Report A Drunk Driver program was launched Friday by AAA Carolinas' Foundation for Traffic Safety and officials with the City of Columbia.

People can call 911 and give details about someone they suspect of driving drunk. The calls will be coded specifically for the RADD campaign, and tipsters get $100 if the person is convicted.

SC issuing free farmers' market coupons to seniors

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - Some South Carolina senior citizens can get help buying some healthy food this summer.

On Friday, Mt. Nebo Baptist Church is offering seniors a chance to pick up coupons good for $25 worth of fresh fruits and vegetables. They're available for low-income people age 60 and older and can be redeemed at local farmers' markets between now and Oct. 15.

The program is called the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program and is made possible through a partnership with the South Carolina Department of Social Services.

Calling All Baroque Musicians!

This summer the Columbia Baroque Soloists are offering Masters Classes in the baroque recorder and the harpsichord, participants and auditors are welcome.

The classes will be held on July 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd    from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the USC Music School.

Tuition for the classes are $80 for a participant, $60 for a student, $40 for an auditor and $10 for an individual session auditor.

Gamecock earns All-America honors

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS)- South Carolina senior LB Dantzler has
earned third-team All-America honors at the designated hitter position by
Baseball America.

Dantzler was the Gamecocks' leading hitter
this season with a .322 average (69-for-214) with 15 homers and 53 RBI.  His .444 on-base percentage and
.617 slugging percentage were also top marks among the squad.

Dantzler was drafted in the 14th round by the Toronto
Blue Jays last week. 

Tornado Watch issued for the Midlands

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS)- A Tornado Watch has been issued for the Midlands until 10 p.m.

The watch affects the following counties: Calhoun, Clarendon, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Orangeburg, Richland, Saluda, and Sumter.   

A watch means that conditions are favorable for tornado development.

Storms moving into the Midlands ahead of a cold front to our west Monday afternoon were bringing severe weather.

Look for periods of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

SC Food Policy Council Holds Summer Meeting

The South Carolina Food Policy Council will hold its next meeting at the Phillips Market Center, located at the State Farmers Market, in West Columbia on June 14. The cost to attend this one-day event is $10.  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the program concludes at 4 p.m.   Lunch will be sponsored by the Lowcountry Housing Trust.
