USC set to open welcome center in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina is opening a welcome center in downtown Charleston.

The center is scheduled to open on King Street on Wednesday, although Tuesday's heavy rains may impact the schedule.

The idea of the center is to serve as an introduction to the university for local residents and the millions of tourists who visit the Charleston area each year.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A new federal credit union branch run entirely by students is opening on the University of South Carolina campus.

University spokeswoman French Brewer says the newest branch of the Carolina Collegiate Federal Credit Union is set to open Wednesday in the Russell House university union center.

Brewer says the new branch is run entirely by students from the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management.

The federal credit union is open to faculty, staff and students at the university and its branches around the state.

Sept. 8: ★Infant Mortality Awareness (IMA) Walk: In recognition of National Infant Mortality Awareness Month in September, Palmetto Healthy Start will host its first annual Infant Mortality Awareness Walk, “Small Steps to a Healthy Start,” from 8–10:30 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel St. All proceeds from the 5k walk will support Palmetto Healthy Start’s initiative to promote safe sleep, reducing the rate of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Those interested in participating must register by Tuesday, Sept. 2.

-- With the 2012-13 school year underway, the Gamecock fall sports are in full swing with several home events scheduled this week.

 

The women's soccer team will be the first Gamecock squad to face Clemson this Saturday, September 1, at 7 p.m.

 

After sweeping this weekend's Gamecock Invitational the volleyball team will host the Slovenian National Team in a free exhibition match.

 

Cross Country hosts their lone home meet of the year at Fort Jackson on Friday.
