Historic Columbia Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Preservation Awards, an annual event that recognizes preservation efforts and projects in the City of Columbia and Richland County. The deadline for nominations is February 11, 2013.

 

Each year Historic Columbia Foundation recognizes leaders in the preservation of our local history with awards for preservation/restoration, adaptive use, new construction in a historic context and preservation leadership. Nominations should be limited to recent projects (completed in the last five years) located in Columbia and Richland County and need to meet the following criteria. Only completed projects will be considered. The award categories are:

 

      Preservation/Restoration

Projects of historical significance restored to their original design.

Recent recipients: Mast General Store, Historic Little Red School House, Lorick House

 

     Adaptive Use

Projects of rehabilitation that incorporate new elements, allowing the original structure to be used in a new function.

Recent recipients: Columbia Supply Building, Columbia Innovation Center, 1921 Henderson Street

 

      New Construction in an Historic Context

New buildings placed in an historic district or adjacent to historic structures that complement the historic context.

Recent recipients: 601 Gervais Street/1218 Pulaski Street Complex, Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections, USC Library and Township Auditorium

 

       Preservation Leadership

Nominations in this category will recognize an individual, governmental agency, and/or community or neighborhood association who contributed to the advancement of historic preservation in the region.

Recent recipients: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Rodger Stroup and Dr. Michael Stout

 

Awards will be presented at Historic Columbia Foundation’s Annual Preservation Awards Luncheon on May 2.

 

"Our annual preservation awards recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of many local projects that add to the historical, architectural and cultural significance of our community," said Robin Waites, Historic Columbia Foundation's executive director.
