Civil rights leader to be honored with special license plate | Arts & Culture

On February 12, the TwinCity Outreach Mission will celebrate the official unveiling and National Press Conference of the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune South Carolina License Plate.

On June 19, 2012, a General bill was passed by the South Carolina House and Senate and signed into law by Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina on June 26, 2012 for a special license plate in the name of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

Dr. Bethune is the first African American to be honored with this prestigious distinction.

A native of Mayesville, SC, Dr. Bethune was an American educator, civil rights leader, and founder of the National Council of Negro Women.

The unveiling will be held from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the South Carolina Statehouse. All are invited to witness this historic moment in history.

Proceeds from the sale of the license plate will benefit various charitable organizations dear to Dr. Bethune, the construction and operation of the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Museum Center, maintenance of the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Nature Trail, promotion of tourism in the Town of Mayesville, Sumter County and the State of South Carolina and other projects that impact education, economic development and job creation for the Citizens of South Carolina through tourism.
