Former New York Gov. George Pataki spoke at the University of South Carolina summer commencement exercises for baccalaureate, master's and professional-degree recipients from all eight campuses at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug.6, in the Colonial Life Arena.

Commencement exercises for doctoral candidates began at 8:30 a.m. at the Koger Center for the Arts.

Pataki was New York's governor during the Sept. 11 attacks. As governor and since leaving office, he has championed policies in renewable energy and environmental fields. He will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Northwestern University chemist and materials scientist Tobin J. Marks will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Science degree.

The university expects to award 1,110 degrees from the Columbia campus, including four associate's degree, 536 baccalaureate degrees, one pharmacy degree, one medicine degree, 10 graduate certificates, 425 master's degrees, 28 specialist's degrees and 105 doctoral degrees.
