South Carolina falls to Vanderbilt in elimination game of SEC Tournament

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Conrad Gregor singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Vanderbilt a 4-3 win over South Carolina Thursday in an elimination game of the Southeastern Conference tournament.

Tony Kemp led off with a single and the top-seeded Commodores (49-8) eventually loaded the bases with one out against three relievers.

The Gamecocks (39-18) had intentionally walked Connor Harrell, who had two hits. Gregor delivered his second single of the game to score Kemp.

USC student who firebombed Salty Nut Cafe pleads guilty

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS)- The man who firebombed the Salty Nut Cafe in early 2012 has pleaded guilty.

Theodore Podewil appeared in a Richland County courtroom Thursday to enter the plea. He was sentenced to seven years in prison plus five years probation. The judge also ordered Podewil to undergo mental health treatment.

He was arrested about a month after the January 6, 2012 fire destroyed the inside of the Five Points staple. Police say Podewil, then 22, threw a Molotov cocktail into the window of the restaurant.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Low gas prices are expected to mean more driving for South Carolinians over the Memorial Day weekend. AAA Carolinas says it estimates that more than 443,000 South Carolina motorists will hit the road this weekend. That's 1.5 percent more than last year's holiday. AAA says South Carolina's average gas price is $3.24 a gallon, the lowest in the country.

South Carolina loses first game of SEC Tournament

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Demarcus Henderson and Wes Rea both had RBI singles in
the ninth inning to lift Mississippi State to a 5-3 win over South Carolina
Wednesday night in the second round of the Southeastern Conference tournament.

The Bulldogs (42-16) loaded the bases with one out before Henderson and Rea
drove in runs on consecutive at-bats for the second time in the game.
Mississippi State had beaten Missouri 2-1 in 17 innings Tuesday night, matching
the longest game in SEC tournament history.
